Daleen Roodt

South Africa

As a self-taught artist, Daleen Roodt began with freelance scientific illustration in 2008, and has since developed her botanical art career over a range of subject matter, specialising in indigenous orchids of South Africa. She has a passion for painting outdoors and portraying in situ scenes, bringing to paper her experience of the botanical pursuit, and the harmony presented by nature’s complex interactions. Daleen currently resides in Hillcrest, KwaZulu-Natal, where she paints from her home studio.

Daleen mostly works in watercolour on paper and vellum, but also enjoys copper etching and silverpoint. Her work is featured in the Grootbos Florilegium. Daleen has received both Bronze (2010) and Silver (2013) medals at the Kirstenbosch Biennale, and the Bronze medal at the 21st International Orchid Conference (2014). In 2024 she exhibited at the RHS, where her exhibition of orchids and pollinators was awarded an RHS Gold Medal, Best Artwork on Show, as well as the People’s Choice Award. At ASBA’s 27th Annual International Exhibition in 2024, she received the Best in Show award.
