Basil Besler
Germany
1561 to 1629
Basil Besler was a Nuremberg Botanist, who curated the gardens of the Prince Bishop of Eichstätt, who commissioned him to create a codex of the plants growing in the gardens. The project took almost 16 years to complete, with the Bishop dying the year before the completion. The gardens were sacked by invading Swedish troops in 1633, and was reconstructed and opened to the public in 1998.
