Following a career teaching mathematics and science and writing and illustrating Mathematics textbooks, Laurie discovered botanical illustration. She now works mainly on Australian native species. Owning property in South Gippsland, which contains some cool temperate rain forest, has focused attention on Gondwana land plants, particularly ferns.
