Elizabeth Blackadder was born in Falikirk, Scotland in 1931. She began teaching at the Edinburgh College of Art in 1962, and from there retired in 1986. She worked in a variety of medias, from oil painting to printmaking. Her works have appeared on the Royal Mail stamps, in the New York museum of modern art and the Scottish Gallery of Modern Art. She was also the first woman to be elected to the Royal Scottish Academy and the Royal Academy.
