Masumi Yamanaka’s book, ‘Heritage Trees’, holds complete and detailed illustrations of forty of Kew Garden’s Heritage Trees. These trees, nicknamed the ‘Old Lions’ have been living in the grounds at Kew for over 250 years. Yamanaka records them with meticulous attention, from the form of the full tree to the minutiae of the fruit, flower and foliage. Masumi’s paintings act as a record of a small part of the living tree collection at Kew, and the exhibition spotlights Yamanaka’s crucial work, with a collective display of her Heritage Tree illustrations.
