Margaret Mee was born in Chesham in 1909. Her early studies took place in the School of Art in Watford, before a brief pause during WWII. After the war, she contiued her studies in art at the St. Martins School of Art in London. She moved to Brasil to teach art, where she undertook the change to Botanical Art. She began with raising the issue of the Amazon deforestation. She soon returned to the UK and to Washington DC to publish and exhibit her book. She died as the result of a car crash in Seagrave aged 79 in 1988.

A British-born artist, Margaret Mee, set off for the Brazilian Amazon at the age of 42 and built a life and career raising awareness of the rainforest flora and fighting for the conservation of its habitat.
