Jeanne Holgate

UK

Born 1920

Jeanne Holgate was an official artist to the Royal Horticultural Society from 1954-1966, after teaching herself flower painting. She became one of the world's leading botanical artists.

From 1966, she divided her time between England and the USA, where she had a long-standing connection with Longwood Gardens in Pennsylvannia where she also taught. She was commissioned in 1972 to paint 'The Flowers of America' showing each of the states' flower emblems. Jeanne died in 2010. This more unusual painting reflects her interest in the underwater world which she experienced on many of her extensive travels, particularly to the Caribbean.
