Malena Barretto was the first Margaret Mee Artist Scholar at Kew in 1989 where she learnt from Christabel King. Her work consists mostly of bromeliads and trees and has been displayed in exhibitions and books. Her paintings belong to different private and public collections. Among her publications are The Atlantic Forest - Science and Art, 2015; Arte botânica nel terzo millenio, 2013; Noteworthy trees – 200 years of The Rio de Janeiro Botanical Garden, 2008; Malena Barretto: watercolours and drawings of the Brazilian Flora, 2005.
